A Christmas Table Topper

This was my first ever attempt at quilting... and it was for a Christmas in July craft swap! And there's no better pattern than a Disappearing Nine Patch for a beginner to create something impressive but nice and simple.I even found a bundle of traditional-style Christmas fabrics at Spotlight, perfect for this project!

Cut 9 x 6" squares - 3 x green/red, 3 x red/white, 2 x green, 1 x checkered.
Arrange the layout, then begin to sew your rows together with a 1/4" seam, pressing seams open.

Now cut your square into half, then in half again.

Arrange your layout and sew together with a 1/4" seam, pressing seams open.

Next, cut 1 x 18" square from your bacing fabric. Lay your squares right side together and sew around the edges with a 1/4" seam, leaving at least 6" unsewn.

Turn it right-side out and wriggle the corners out properly. Fold these edges in to match the rest of the edges, pin, and sew around the outside with a 1/4" seam, making sure to sew over these edges to close it.

I chose to Stitch in the Ditch - a nice simple quilting technique - along the outside of each block.

And voila! A simple table topper - use under a main dish or centrepiece... or anything!

Wrapped up, ready to send!

It's lovely! Especially given it was your first try at quilting. Well done!
